Farm Facts & Family Story: Fenendaels of EL-NA FARMS

Farm Facts & Family Story: Fenendaels of EL-NA FARMS

Each year the Kewaunee County Breakfast on the Farm is hosted by a Family Farm located in Kewaunee County!

Our 2025 & 2026 Host Family Farm

EL-NA Farms

Our Story

EL-NA Farms

Spanning 6 generations and 168 years, EL-NA Farms first began in 1858 when the Fenendael’s ancestors immigrated from Belgium and purchased the current homestead from the State of Wisconsin. It wasn’t until 1969 that it became what it is formally known as today – EL-NA Farms – when it was purchased by the 5th generation, Eli and Nancy Fenendael, combining the first two letters of each of their names. In 2000, Eli and Nancy’s sons, Barry, Lonnie, and Shane Fenendael, decided to pursue their love of farming and carry on the family tradition, becoming the 6th generation and current owners when they purchased it from their parents with 100 cows and 240 acres.

Now consisting of 2,500 cows and 7,500 acres, the farm has seen much growth and expansion within the last 25 years, including the addition of many freestall barns, a new mechanical shop, heifer facilities, and an additional manure pit.  A few of their most notable accomplishments include the addition of a new 40-stall rotary parlor in 2008 (the first rotary to be built in Kewaunee County) as well as the purchase of an additional farm in 2022 – Sand Bay Dairy – located in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Their latest extension, a grain facility, has been completed in 2025.

These accomplishments certainly did not come without hardships. In 2010, a fire destroyed part of the original barn and parlor on the homestead. However, in 2022, the Fenendael family suffered their greatest tragedy with the loss of their beloved wife and mother, Nancy.  A true matriarch of the family, Nancy always had a welcoming smile and a home-cooked meal ready. She, alongside Eli, continued to help out on the farm years after their sons took ownership, feeding calves and cutting lawn to name a few. Nancy was the true foundation of the family and farm, loved by all, and will forever be dearly missed.

In addition to family, cow comfort and health have always been of the utmost importance to EL-NA. To improve their herd’s wellbeing and production, the farm transitioned from saw dust to sand bedding with the construction of a sand separation building in 2016. To ensure the best feed quality, EL-NA does all their own planting, harvesting, and spraying, and in 2022, they upgraded their feed storage by building a feed center. Furthermore, the farm has embraced many technological advances along the way with the addition of cow collars to better monitor and be more proactive in their herd’s health as well as utilizing precision planting technologies to optimize their crop yield and soil health.

While EL-NA Farms takes great pride in their past accomplishments, they look forward to the future, with Lonnie’s son, Kurtis, and Shane’s son, Jordan, preparing to become the 7th generation to take over the farm. With continuing education essential to the farm’s future success, Kurtis is pursuing a degree in diesel mechanics from NWTC and Jordan a degree in agronomy from Fox Valley Tech.

Although the farm has grown and adapted throughout the years, their priorities of family, herd and environmental health, and food safety remain the same. As for their future, their goals are to produce the highest quality product, maintain optimal cow health, embrace technological advancements, practice environmental sustainability, and to see the farm thrive for generations to come.

Farm Facts Family Story Heims Hillcrest Dairy

Each year the Kewaunee County Breakfast on the Farm is hosted by a different Family Farm located in Kewaunee County!

Our 2024 Host Family Farm

Heim’s Hillcrest Dairy

As a multi-generational family farm, Heim’s Hillcrest Dairy prides itself on the ‘Family Feel’, both in the business and the daily operations of the farm.  Family is a cornerstone for all that the Heim’s do. Heim’s Hillcrest Dairy was started in 1963 by Ray and Florence Heim, when they purchased the original farm and started milking just 30 cows.  Knowing that he wanted to continue the family farm, Ray and Florence’s son, Lloyd and his wife, Joyce (purchased or became a partner) in 1976 and grew the milking herd to 50 cows.

A devastating fire in 1995 that destroyed the original farm caused Lloyd and Joyce to take a long look at their dreams and goals.  Knowing that farming was what they wanted to do for their family, in 1996 they started rebuilding the current dairy.  With 200 cows, Lloyd and Joyce set the foundation of family and farming. Lloyd and Joyce encouraged their sons to explore life outside of the family farm.  All three of their sons took positions for at least a year off the farm, but the family and the farm were something that they all knew they wanted to be part of.   In 2000, Jeremy and Scott joined the farm in partnership with Lloyd, bringing with them a strong desire to continue to build on the foundation of family and farming. They have always known that for the dairy farm to be successful, they must have happy and healthy cows.  It takes dedication and commitment to the cows to ensure this.  After working part time through high school, Carrie, Scott’s now wife, was offered the Herd Manager role in 2000, a role that she still does today.

As the family grew, so did the farm.  In 2003, they purchased an additional farm just south of the home farm.  With this purchase, they moved all their youngstock down the road, allowing space for 450 cows at the home farm.  In 2008, an addition to the main barn was added, giving space for 640 cows. After many years of having the calves being raised at a custom calf grower, in 2012 they started raising their calves at the home farm with an automatic feeder system and 4 igloo structures.  Jeremey’s daughter, Kiley joined the family farm full time a year later, in 2013 to manage the calf raising.  From a young age Kiley knew that top priority was the health and welfare of the cows and calves.

Seeing a need in Kewaunee and surrounding counties for improved manure application, Jeremy and Scott embarked on a new journey, and Heim Brothers Custom was born in 2015.  Starting with 6 customers, Heim Brothers Custom has grown to 20 customers that they assist with crop harvesting, manure transportation and other trucking needs.  Relying on the highest technology, Jeremy and Scott take great care in continuing to provide neighboring farms handle their manure in a safe, clean and environmentally friendly way ensuring that all nutrients are recorded and accounted for.

The dairy continued to grow in 2017, when they entered into a long-term lease with a neighboring farm just north of the home farm.  As a new maternity area was built at the home farm, this neighboring farm was perfect for the dry cows to stay before coming back to the home farm.  Now this barn is where older heifers live until they are ready to come to the home farm. Animal welfare and health has always been a priority for their family.

In 2020, they invested in the Allflex Collar System.  This system helps the herd team monitor each individual cow and allows them to catch illnesses earlier, ensuring our herd is healthy. During the same year, a new calf barn was built to replace the igloo system.  This new barn has the automatic feeders still, and also provides a controlled environment for the calves to live in.  The controlled environment in the barn helps to ensure that the calves stay healthy and strong. 2020, also added a new partner to the Heim’s Hillcrest Dairy.  Like many, 2020 had Lloyd and Joyce’s eldest son, Rod, taking a closer look at what he wanted out of life. After many years away from the farm, Rod made the decision to return to the family farm as Shop Manager, a role that ensures that all the equipment is safe and running smoothly. With the expansion of Heim Brothers Custom and the continued need for maintaining the equipment at the dairy, a new and bigger shop was built in 2021.  The shop was designed to allow for continued growth in both the Heim Brothers and Heim’s Hillcrest Dairy.

They are always looking for new ways to improve not only their dairy, but also the environment.  In March of 2021, the family embarked on a journey to become Carbon Neutral.  The first step was starting to haul the manure from the farm to the NEW digester in Denmark WI. In 2021 and 2022, two more family members joined the farm through their high schools Youth Apprenticeship Programs.  After graduating from High School, both Jeremy’s son Ben, and Rod’s son Sam, joined the farm full time.   Ben and Sam both have roles in the field work for the farm and the Heim Brothers Custom business. The newest project on the farm is a new Cross Ventilated Barn that was built in 2022.  This barn uses the latest technology to control all systems in the barn – from lighting, curtains and fans to provide the cows with the best climate and environment based on the current temperature in the barn.

One side of the barn is dedicated to the Maternity Area for the farm. Like the rest of the barn, the maternity area uses the latest technology to provide the best environment for the cows to calve in. A lot has changed in the 60+ years since Ray and Florence started laying the foundation of what is now the Heim’s Hillcrest Dairy and Heim Brothers Custom.  As a family, they have held true to that foundation, with passion and dedication to being an impactful dairy farm family not only in Kewaunee County, but also the State of Wisconsin. Their website is https://heimshillcrest.com/.

Interview with the Family – Q&A

Q:  When did your Dairy’s story begin? How did your journey begin? A: In 1953, while farming nearby, Joe Kinnard purchased this farm with the intent that his son Vernon would take it over when he got out of the service. Vernon and his wife Betty officially took over in 1958, milking 36 cows. Their sons David (Anita) and Randy then formed a partnership with their father upon graduating from high school, growing the herd to 100 cows. Vernon retired in 1992 and continued to help on the farm. David’s son Brian and Randy’s son Kyler joined in the partnership as the 4th generation in 2013 and in 2015 a new sand bedded freestall barn was built with 4 Lely Robotic milking systems to grow the heard to it’s present size of 290 cows.

Q: What is your farming background? Are you a 1st-generation farmer, or do you come from many generations of farmers? A: 4 generations.

Q:  What milestones happened in the early years? Kids, expansions – what were the highlights? A: Vernon and Betty have 4 children, 14 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way. Dave and Anita have 5 children and 8 grandchildren. Randy has 3 children, 1 granddaughter and 1 on the way. Brian and his wife Caitlin have 2 boys. Kyler and his wife Tarynn are expecting there first in July.

Q:  To sum it all up – what do we see here today? What are your achievements? What are your goals & values? A: Our farm strives to maintain a high producing herd with the upmost care for our animals the land and our neighbors.

Q:  Anything else you’d like to share? A:  We hosted Breakfast on the Farm in 1989.

Thank you for joining us for Breakfast on the Farm in Kewaunee County – Father’s Day 2022!

The family has shared their history with us – read this wonderful story they have shared and view great photos!

Family Story

Augustian Farms LLC started in 1882 when the original deed for the land was purchased.  The farm is currently owned and operated by Todd, Gianne and Aaron Augustian.  Brothers, Todd, and, Aaron, wanted to continue their family’s dairy farming legacy and continue the strong commitment to raising quality cows and being good stewards to the land.

Augustian Family

Todd took ownership of the farm from his parents, Edward and Claire, in 2001, milking 60 cows in a stanchion barn.  In 2005, a devastating barn fire destroyed the farm facilities, including a barn that was over 100 years old, and the entire milking herd.  Todd was able to rent a barn from the neighbor and started to build back the herd.  He started with 40 cows and grew to 240 in that facility.  In 2007, Aaron joined his brother, Todd, bringing 100 animals to the farm, officially starting a farm partnership. In 2009, the brothers started an LLC and came home to the original farmland to build a new dairy, which included a double 6 parlor, accommodating 400 cows. The farm continued to grow to what it is today, housing 1,100 Holstein cows.  In, 2015, the farm upgraded to a double 14 parallel parlor where cows are milked three times a day.

Augustian Family

Youngstock are raised in Kansas by a custom grower.  The calves leave the farm daily and return two months pre-calving.  Augustian’s feel the drier environment in Kansas is better for calves and allows them to grow into healthier cows.

Augustian’s believe cow comfort is key to producing quality milk.  The cows are housed in a cross-ventilated freestall barn and bedded with sand for ideal cow comfort.  The sand is raked daily and replaced weekly.  The large fans in the freestall barn allows the cows to stay cool and comfortable in the summer.  Cows are fed a diet specially formulated by a dairy nutritionist that utilizes the crops raised by Augustian’s.  Feed is pushed up for the cows 12 to 15 times a day making sure they always have fresh, quality feed to eat.

Augustian Family

Augustian Farms uses a cow manager system that allows Todd and Aaron to track individual cow movements through special ear tags.  Reports from this system will show how often cows eat, move and ruminate.  The system even tracks each cow’s temperature.  Reports are reviewed daily.  This allows for a cow to quickly be monitored if they have deviated from their typical patterns.

Augustian Family

Along with building new and improved facilities after the fire, the brothers also wanted to increase their farm conservation efforts to ensure healthy soils for future generations.

This goal led Augustian’s to join the Door-Kewaunee Watershed Demonstration Farm Network. The Network features four farms that demonstrate the best conservation practices to protect the Great Lakes.  Through this network, new and innovative ideas are tested on a small scale and then, if successful, the practices are implemented on a large scale.  Augustian’s have implemented no-till practices and use cover crops to help protect the soil.  They have reshaped grassed waterways to meet today’s standards and have planted a portion of their land in native grasses for wildlife and a bee habitat.  They believe that clean water and agriculture can coincide together and that farmers are also great conservationists of lake and stream water quality.

The Augustian’s farm 1,500 acres of corn silage, alfalfa and winter wheat for their livestock.  These crops, along with some purchased protein and dry corn, will feed the cows for a year.

Augustian Family

Both Todd and Aaron previously had careers off the farm but knew that coming back to the farm was in their blood.  They have a passion for the agriculture industry and challenge each other to make Augustian Farms an operation that will be a part of Wisconsin’s strong dairy tradition well into the future.

Family Story – 2019 Hosts: Kinnard Farms

Kinnard Farm, Inc. History

The family has shared their history with us – read this wonderful story they have shared and view great photos!

In 1948, our parents, Alvin and Milly Kinnard, had a dream. Recently returned from his service in WW-2, Dad and Mom wanted nothing more than to pursue their dream of building both a family and a dairy farm. Using money borrowed from their parents, Mom and Dad started by purchasing 80 acres located near Dad’s home farm. Knowing that great cows are the foundation of a dairy farm, 14 registered animals were purchased from a great uncle. Through their progressive approach and commitment to hard work, the farm prospered and grew. Today, our family and our team of talented employees crops nearly 12,000 acres of land and cares for 8,300 cows. Most of the animals in our herd today are the direct descendants of Mom and Dad’s original 14 cows, and we now farm much of the land that was originally settled by our Belgian ancestors five generations ago.

Each year Kewaunee County Breakfast on the Farm is hosted by a different family farm – learn more about our 2019 host farm’s history! You can find Kinnard Farms, Inc. on Facebook!

Our parents’ goal was to build a business that would last for generations, and it has. We are proud to be a part of the Kewaunee County community and employ many of our neighbors and friends. Our talented dairy team is devoted to tending to our girls’ every need in our climate controlled state-of-the-art barns. Our farming team prides itself on farming our land in a manner that ensures it will be in excellent shape for future generations, as well as being highly productive today.

Sustainability is in our roots. Mom and Dad taught us that this is not our land, and these are not our resources. It is simply our responsibility to be the next generation of caretakers. This is a responsibility we take very seriously.

We care for our girls, our land, and our water resources with a goal of continuous improvement; striving to leave these precious resources in an ever-improved state for the next generation of caretakers. We work with a team of local and national experts that advise us on how to best care for our girls, our land, and our water resources. We base all decisions on the three legs of sustainability – how will this decision affect our community, our environment, and our farm’s future. We refer to this decision-making process as Smart Sustainability®, a process which makes the future the reason for the actions we take today. Our vision is a sustainable community for generations to come.

Our family has made a conscientious decision to reinvest in this community where we have lived and farmed for five generations because we love this community. Although the look of the farm has changed, our family’s passion and commitment for the community we proudly call home remains stronger than ever. We are fortunate to be working together as a family and with our incredibly dedicated and talented team to keep our parent’s dream alive while creating new opportunities for our community.

Our work is founded on the love we have for this land and our passion for farming. We take great pride in knowing that we are producing high-quality and wholesome milk and cheese for families; families just like yours.

Junion Homestead Farm History:  150 Years

Over the last 150 years, the family has kept wonderful records of the history of their homestead farm – read this wonderful story they have shared with us!

JUNION HOMESTEAD, est. 1868

Lambert Junion was born on January 28, 1816 at Corroy-Le-Grand Belguim. He married Marie Julinne Raison, a girl from a village not far away called Sart-Risbart. They had four children. On the 15th day of February, 1856 they left Belgium for America. They sailed on the Vessel Colorek and arrived at the Port of New York on the 25th day of March, 1856. They took along their oldest son named Xavier and left the three other children with the grandparents. Xavier was 12 years old. Along with his parents they settled in the Luxemburg Township, Kewaunee County in 1868. Lambert died November 20, 1891 at the age of 75. Julinne died October 9, 1900 at the age of 82.

The Second Generation

Xavier Junion married Josephine Mottard, a Belgian girl that came from Beauvlihain, Belguim. They had eleven children, six boys and five girls: Theophile born September 9, 1869, Mary – January 18, 1871, Louise – June 20, 1873, Clementine – July 12, 1875, Joseph – January 19, 1877, Fabian – February 22, 1879, Adel – March 13, 1881, twins Norris and Charles – December 6, 1882 John – April 25, 1884, and Josephine – May 13, 1886.

A log house 25×30 feet was built and also a 80×40 feet basement barn with stone walls two feet thick. The horses were kept in this barn that were needed to work the 320 acres of land the family had purchased with hard work. Pigs, chickens, and cows also occupied the barn. Around the year 1891, daughter Mary married and an addition on the house of logs was almost finished, also of logs. Mary married Joseph Joniaux and they danced in the new addition (24×18 feet). More girls married, boys grew up and needed farms of their own, so Xavier divided the 320 acres he owned; 80 acres for Norris, 80 acres for Charles, 80 acres for Fabian, and 80 acres for Joseph – which became the Homestead, as he was the one chosen to care for his parents. Theophile and John never married, so they remained on the farm to help out. Xavier died May 28, 1916 at the age of 72 and his wife Josephine died February 21, 1920 at the age of 70.

“Ye Olde Tractors” – Jim & Barney were the team of horses used for farm work in the pre-tractors era

The Third Generation

Joseph Junion was the third generation on this farm. He married Juliet Everard on November 4, 1903. Though their farms were separated, the three brothers (Norris, Charles, and Joseph) worked the land together, each with their own livestock. A sawmill was on the farm, for sawing lumber for their own use. Joe, John, and Theophile also did custom sawing for other people. The sawmill was powered by a steam engine and was stationed by the waterway. A deep hole was dug to capture water from melting snow and rain. Later on tractors were used; first a Hart Par then a Tition. With the use of the sawmill, more buildings were built on the farm. Joseph and Juliet had two children. Collette, born August 2, 1912 and Lawrence born July 3, 1915. Joseph Junion died August 12, 1934 and Juliet Junion died April 9, 1948.

Lawrence Junion (4th generation Junion Homestead Farm)

The Fourth Generation

In 1937 Juliet Junion turned the farm over to Lawrence. Lawrence’s sister Collette had married Ben Koss on June 22, 1932 and they remained on the farm to help. Lawrence married Magdalene Deprey on June 19 , 1940 at St. Peters Catholic Church, Lincoln. They moved into the original log house built so many years ago. At this time, Norris Junion’s farm was for sale, so Collette & Ben bought the 80 acres in the spring of 1941. They milked approximately 14 cows by hand, and raised pigs & chickens. A gasoline engine was used to pump water to the barn and to light lanterns. They had two work horses and, in 1942, bought a used McCormick Deering 10-20 tractor. In 1943 electricity came to the farm. The barn was remodeled, gutters were put in along with stanchions for 34 cows. They bought 108 acres of land from Jule Joniaux in the town of Red River, adding to the Homestead’s 80 acres, on October 25, 1948. Combines were something new, so they purchased a 6 foot Massey Harris clipper pull type combine. No more shocking grain. Surge milk machines and milk coolers made farm life easier. A Ford tractor, plow, and wheel weights were purchased for $1,658.41 and the 10-20 was traded for a used Massey Harris 101. In 1955 they traded it for a new John Deere 70, which cost $3,830. In 1963 a Minneapolis Moline was purchased.

Peggy’s brothers, Jim & Larry Junion (5th generation Junion Homestead Farm)

Besides farming, Lawrence owned trucks and did trucking for Larson Co., hauling green beans, peas, and sweet corn for 22 years. As time went by, Magdalene’s asthma became worse, Jim had a job, and Larry was drafted left for Vietnam on July 16, 1965 – so the herd of cattle was sold on June 6, 1966. The family began crop farming, also growing peas and beans on contract for the Larsen Co. and Green Bay Canning. Lawrence retired the trucking business and got a job in Algoma at Badger Northland and Calumet Co. delivering Liquid Manure tanks until his retirement on April 12, 1982.

Lawrence & Magdalene Junion Wedding Photo (4th generation Junion Homestead Farm) June 19, 1940

There was quite a change now for Magdalene, as she began running the farm. In spring, the cultivating was done during the day and Lawrence returned home from work to find the fields ready for planting. They purchased a John Deere 45 combine, Magdalene learned to operate it and did most of the harvesting of oats and winter wheat. Fall plowing was done mostly by her also and weekends by both Magdalene and Lawrence.

They had three children: Jim born July 31, 1941; Larry born May 17, 1946; and Peggy born August 31, 1959. In 1996, the 1955 John Deere 70 tractor was restored. Jim took it to Valmy, Wisconsin for display at the Northeastern Wisconsin Antique Power Association, to Door County and to Heritage days in Luxemburg. Lawrence & Magdalene farmed for 50 years and on October 1, 1990 they moved to Luxemburg.

Jim Junion & Peggy (5th generation Junion Homestead Farm)

The Fifth Generation

Peggy Junion is the fifth generation. She married Anthony (Tony) Knorn of Rib Lake, Wisconsin on September 18, 1982. They moved onto the farm October of 1990. Tony cash cropped the farm for two years while working out on Morris Seifert’s farm and Peggy worked at Bellin Hospital. At this time, they had three children; Amanda born on September, 16,1985; Megan born on September 25,1989; and Amber born on November 23, 1991.

They purchased the farm January of 1993. They started remodeling the barn March of 1993. They remodeled one side of the barn with tie stalls, put a barn cleaner in, built a new milk house, rewired the barn, installed a bulk tank, vacuum line, and milked cows with bucket milkers and a stepsaver for the first year.

They purchased a herd of cows on May 29, 1993 from Lamont Burkhalter, of Tomah, Wisconsin; 29 cows and 6 bred heifers. They hired Dave Ducat to transport the cows home. The barn stood empty from June 6, 1966 until May 29, 1993; eight days shy of 27 years.

The last weekend of April 1994 they started remodeling the second side of the barn, removing the old concrete and stations. Half of the herd had to stay outside and they had to milk in two shifts. The first night the cows were outside they received four inches of snow. New tie stalls and a pipeline milk system were installed. Now the barn held 36 cows. In 1995, they cemented an outdoor bunk feeder in the cow yard. In 1996, they installed a manure auger and a 900 gallon bulk tank to replace the 400 gallon tank.

On February 5, 1997 the garage and shop burned down. They lost two tractors, tools, parts inventory, and many miscellaneous items totaling a loss of about $100,000. On April 7 the construction of their new 60×100 shop and machine shed began, by Walters Builders. On April 12, they began building the two stall car garage. March 27, 1997 they began remodeling the south end of the barn, which was used as machine shed. They put an additional 12 cow stalls and 2 maternity pens in, they put the manure auger out the south end of the barn. May of 1997 they were chosen “Farm of the Month” by Tri-County Publications. In December 1997, they were selected by Kewaunee County Dairy Promotion Committee to host June Dairy Month Breakfast on the Farm, which was held July 5, 1998.

On March 28, 1998 they went to an auction in Shawano and bought an IH 986 tractor. On April 19, 1998 they signed a contract for a 20×80 Harvestor Silo to be built in May. Tony & Peggy’s fourth daughter, Mikayla was born on September 21, 1998. In December of 1998, Peggy stopped working at Bellin Hospital, choosing to be a stay at home mom and help on the farm.

In 2001, they began raising their own heifers (prior to that they were custom raised). Early in 2004 the 2+2 was purchased and, in spring of 2004, Amanda graduated high school. That fall, Amanda attended UW-Platteville to study Animal Science/Pre-Vet.

On April 28, 2005 Peggy’s father, Lawrence, passed away at the age of 89 after a three year battle with cancer. In December of 2005, they began making plans to build a compost barn and parlor. They toured a few compost bedded barns in Minnesota before making their final plans. In 2006, they put up the first 20×100’ Harvestor Silo and also purchased a used Patz TMR mixer.

The Knorn girls showing in Futurity (Junion Homestead Farm)

September 2007 excavation and construction for their compost bedded pack barn, parlor, and manure pit began. The last week of November one side of the barn was ready for cows, but the parlor wasn’t completed. For about one week, they ran cows back & forth from the new barn to the old barn for milking. On December 3, 2007 they milked the cows in their Dairymaster swing 12 parlor for the first time.

In May of 2008, Megan graduated high school and Amanda graduated UW-Platteville, taking a job at Milk Specialties company in Boscobel, Wisconsin. In fall, Megan began school at UW-Madison to study Dairy Science. March of 2009, Amanda came back to the farm as herd manager.

On January 5, 2010, Peggy’s mother Magdalene passed away at the age of 89. Amber graduated high school in May of 2010. In August, Amber started school at Paul Mitchell The School Green Bay for cosmetology. Amanda married Jesse Dolphin on August 28, 2010. On December 20, 2011 Tony & Peggy’s first grandchild was born, as Amanda and Jesse welcomed Jace into the world.

In May of 2012, Megan graduated from UW-Madison and took a job with Genex breeding cows. 2012 was also the year they started plans for the transition barn and a feed pad was made for silage bags. Megan married Kyle Zeman on June 29, 2013.

On January 23, 2015, a second grandson (Jolin) was born to proud parents, Amanda & Jesse. June 2015, the second barn was constructed and the first cows moved in. December 2015 Megan changed career paths, taking a job with Semex as a District Sales Representative. In 2017, Mikayla began attending UW-Platteville (Dairy Science)! On August 25, 2017 Megan and Kyle welcomed their first child, Tony & Peggy’s first granddaughter, Eliza – the newest member of the 7th generation.

Q&A with our 2018 Host Family – Junion Homestead Farm

What is your farming background?  Are you a 1st-generation farmer, or do you come from many generations of farmers?

Tony was born and raised on a farm in Rib Lake, WI. When he moved here after marrying Peggy, he worked for two other local farms before purchasing Peggy’s parents farm in 1993.  Peggy’s parents, Lawrence & Magdalene Junion sold the cows in 1966 when Peggy was young, they cash cropped the land after the cows left.  Tony and Peggy brought back the cows and are the fifth generation on the farm – their children are the 6th generation, and their grandchildren are 7th generation farm kids!

What hardships have you had to overcome, personal or professional?  How have they shaped the farm/you?

There are two hardships that stick out most in their minds. The first was the fire that destroyed the farm’s shop. The fire happened on February 5, 1997.  Tony was able to get one tractor (the IH 666) out before the burning building was totally consumed by the fire.

The second hardship was the learning curve they experienced in their 2007 expansion.  Learning how to manage the compost bed pack facility proved challenging in the beginning.  They lost a lot of good cows the first year to toxic mastitis – there were times they were unsure the pack barn was the best decision, but as they learned to manage the pack the cows’ health improved!

Growth & Education:  How did you grow your farm, and yourselves, to result in what we see today?

Tony was enrolled in the Young Farmer Class taught by Bill Zemke through NWTC. When the cows came home in 1993, they took things slow, remodeling the barn one side at a time. They have always had a desire to learn the most they can, and to do the best job possible on the farm. They believe in researching and consulting with others as they prepare to make a change on the farm.  When looking to expand, they researched compost pack barns and went on farm tours to the see the facilities first hand. They also toured numerous parlor set ups before choosing the Dairymaster parlor.

To sum it all up:  What do we see here today?  What are your achievements?  What are your goals & values?

What you see today on the farm has been 150 years in the making.  They have the 5th, 6th, and 7th generation of family working and growing together on the farm. They value the tradition of family farming and are proud of the fact that they are the blood, sweat, and tears of the operation since 1868.

“We strive to manage our cattle and land the best we can to ensure the success of the farm and the generations to come.”
