Q&A with our 2018 Host Family – Junion Homestead Farm

Q&A with our 2018 Host Family – Junion Homestead Farm

Q&A with the Knorn Family of Junion Homestead Farm What is your farming background?  Are you a 1st-generation farmer, or do you come from many generations of farmers? Tony was born and raised on a farm in Rib Lake, WI. When he moved here after marrying Peggy, he worked for two other local farms before purchasing Peggy's parents farm in 1993.  Peggy's parents, Lawrence & Magdalene Junion sold the cows in 1966 when Peggy was young, they cash cropped the land after the cows left.  Tony and Peggy brought back the cows and are the fifth generation on the farm - their children are the 6th generation, and their grandchildren are 7th generation farm kids! What hardships have you had to overcome, personal or professional?  How have they shaped the farm/you? There are two hardships that stick out most in their minds. The first was the fire that destroyed the farm's shop. The fire happened on February 5, 1997.  Tony was able to get one...

2018 Dairy Ambassador Visit

The Cow Lady (a.k.a. Renee Ebert) continues the mission of educating our future food producers with a big smile! Pictured are the first graders at Algoma Elementary from the classes of Mrs. Lebotte, Mrs. Herman & Mrs. Clarke. Mrs. Ebert shared materials offered by the Milk Marketing Board, which was recently rebranded as Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin. The materials include the book, “My Field Trip to a Wisconsin Dairy Farm". The book talks about all aspects of agriculture, not just dairy, and the five food groups. The class made kebabs (grapes, strawberries, two cheeses, cucumbers & a wheat pita bread) and sandwiches with, turkey & ham. It looks like they had a great time together!...

2018 Dairy Ambassador’s School Visits

Meet Renee Ebert, loving known as “The Cow Lady” Renee is one of our volunteer dairy ambassadors who visit local schools to talk about dairy farming. Pictured is her visit to the 3k class at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Algoma. Renee explained her teaching materials are designed for Kindergarten to 4th grade, so she came up with her own material for preschoolers. The kids were allowed to dress in animal costumes & they sang “Old McDonald Had A Farm.” She fills her large milk carton with things from the farm, like a cow, horse & pig. She talks about the food they eat & how different it is from what people eat. Renee leads a conversation about machinery like the tractor, planter, chopper, & skid steer. Then talk about field work, planting & harvesting crops for the animals. And in return, cows give us milk. She shows a milk truck that hauls milk to a cheese plant & talks about milk being...
